  How it all works . . .

The relationships in this balance

of readers and writers/illustrators could easily become rather complicated if we let them, but our aim is for everyone to enjoy the benefits of both worlds (viewer and creator) without worrying about either one!  Here, then, is an outline of how we try to interrelate what goes on
at The Gay Publishing Company with what rewards you get out of the deal.

. . . for the writer:

The writers are the stars of this show, for without them, we wouldn't be a show!  Here's how the writer's part of the relationship works:

  1. Writers submit a  piece  for publication according to  current writer guidelines.
  2. The piece is reviewed and, if necessary, submitted for editing.
  3. The piece is returned to author for revision.
  4. The author returns a revised rewrite for follow-up review.
  5. If needed, the piece will be returned for further work; as a rule,
however, the piece will be ready for proofing and posting—
contingent on contract negotiating and signing.
  6. The piece is published in the magazine and posted online, and the process
begins again with another piece or a new submission!

. . . for the reader:

Ah, the other side of the catch-22 coin—without readers, why would we even need writers?  but without writers, what would readers do?

  1. Potential readers  sign up to receive  our e-newsletter  or  our magazine,
or they simply register to access our publications via the Web site (by
    purchasing a virtual subscription).
  2. The free e-newsletter announces the latest authors, titles, and genres that
we've published, as well as news from the gay publishing world; we'll also throw
in an occasional teaser paragraph from one of our pieces!
  3. The magazine, in virtual and print versions, provides the easiest access to our
writers' creations: short stories and flash fiction, as well as serialized scenes from
plays, chapters of novels, and sections from memoirs—the backbone of  our publishing
    archives and backlist catalog.
All stories are also posted online, at The Gay
    Publishing Company's Web site.
  4. By following links in the virtual magazine or by visiting and logging into the Web site,
readers will find additional information about the story and interviews with authors,
as well as clues that foreshadow what's coming in the next serialized installment . . .
  5. From links on the story's Web page, readers will be able to comment on stories,
chat with the author, and even provide financial support to the author—to enable
the author to write more! Video interviews and audio biographies will also be a
    part of the mix.

. . . for the illustrator:

The illustrators are the proverbial "icing on the cake." Without them, we would just be a mesmerizing overdose of letters turning to words turning to sentences turning to paragraphs turning to pages—well, you get the idea.

  1. Illustrators submit illustration(s) according to  current illustrator guidelines.
  2. Illustrations are reviewed for appropriateness and relevance.
  3. If any adjustments to the illustrations are suggested by the reviewers
(to improve relevancy), the artist will be given the option of revision.
  4. Final illustrations will either be assigned to appropriate pieces or
    posted in "the gallery."
