I know . . . you thought
they looked a bit odd, and you're right—most of the photographs you
currently see throughout the site are just placeholders, or as we call
that type of thing in "the business," boilerplate. But, you can help change all that by sending in your own, personally-taken photos. The Gay Publishing Company will consider all photographic submissions at this point (we will be using illustrations to decorate our publications; however, for the Web site, we want to use photos).
And, what, you wonder, do you get out of this deal? Why, you get the notoriety of having a photo posted on this site! We will provide at least a credit line by the photo as well as a separate page of credits with links to personal portfolios—how's that for a prize?
Be creative with your subjects and poses. We do not want a complete collection
of happy,
smiley couples. We want the site photos to reflect the site's contents. We'll use portraits, yes, but we're also looking for a variety of activities, settings, and happenings. Consider photos of pets with their people, multigenerational shots, groups, even "staged" drama (just don't hold us responsible for starting a real argument, though)! You're the photographers, so show the world what you've got.
Submission Information
When you are ready to submit the electronic copy,
- mail a disk copy to the address on the Contact page
- send the electronic file to "the Gay Editor at Im Your Editor dot com"
(say it out loud if it doesn't make sense) or
- upload the file to the following ftp site: ftp://www.onlinefilefolder.com/
(contact theGayEditor if you need a user name and password).
- if the photos are already posted on the Internet, submit the locations of your photos
Submit as soon as you can—we'll be selecting several photos but the early bird
might get the prime worms! Along with your photo(s), be sure to send along any caption information.
Legal Requirements
Please send only photos that you have taken and for which you can vouch for being the photographer—you will be expected to sign a waiver claiming such; subjects may also be asked to sign waivers approving the use of their photos on this site. If you can readily provide both pieces of this information, your chances of being in the final round of selections improves greatly.
Technical Considerations
Photos saved with an appropriate color depth and resolution create smaller files, which, in the scheme of things, means faster load times on the Internet—a major consideration of commercial sites, including The Gay Publishing Company. It is in both our best interests for you to make your picture file as small as possible. The following table contains some suggested formats and resolutions:
General Image Description |
Save File As,
for Internet Use |
black and white |
GIF at 72 pixels per inch (ppi) |
simple picture |
GIF at 72 ppi |
complex picture |
JPEG at 72 ppi |
As shown above, a resolution of 72 pixels per inch is most often recommended for Internet use.
Finish sizes on this Web site are currently 200 pixels high by 600 pixels wide (the large masthead image) and 60 pixels by 60 pixels (the smaller square images), though other sizes will be considered. Submissions that are saved using this information will increase their chances of being in the final round of selections.
Final decisions rest with theGayEditor and the advisory board of The Gay Publishing Company. See the General Contest Rules page of this site for other qualifications and restrictions and information. Selected photos might not be used immediately or for an unlimited amount of time but would be rotated into and out of use. Photographers will retain rights to their photos and may opt to continue soliciting their use elsewhere; however, such action might cause removal from the list of photos for use at this site.
