Orlando, FL; June 20, 2009: Just in time to celebrate the accomplishments gay pioneers have made in the forty years since the Stonewall riots—and to honor the pioneering victims of the Black Cat Tavern in Los Angeles two years earlier—The Gay Publishing Company has started selling subscriptions at an introductory “pioneer” discount.
Subscriptions provide access to the publications of The Gay Publishing Company, primarily through a magazine that will be published monthly after the first few beta issues.
“The magazine of The Gay Publishing Company is essentially what sets us apart from other publishers,” says founder Stephen Evans, “especially those that market to lgbt readers.” The magazine will be published online and in a “virtual,” or electronic, format that can be downloaded and printed on a printer or read on most common e-reading devices; it will also be published in print. Special large-type editions and audio excerpts will be available electronically, too, at no extra charge to subscribers.
As part of the introductory discount, subscribers will be asked to participate in beta testing—“So our readers will get exactly what they want,” says Evans. Subscribers will be asked for input on formatting possibilities, design options, and delivery alternatives, as well as a range of other, general opinions and suggestions.
“Each issue of our magazine will contain a short story or two, some flash fiction, and perhaps some poetry—all in their entirety. But the focus of each issue will be serialized installments of longer works; for example, chapters of novels, scenes from scripts and screenplays, and excerpts from memoirs.”
“Serializing is simply a different way of delivering our stories to our readers,” Evans explains. “Such delivery was common in the 1800s. For instance, nearly all of the major works from Charles Dickens were written and published in sections before they were collected and sold as books. The Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first appeared in issues of The Strand Magazine. In addition, Jack London’s White Fang first appeared in several months of The Outing Magazine. And, more recently, Stephen King first released The Plant as a serial; in fact, it, along with Douglas Clegg’s Naomi, was one of the first 'e-serials'!”
“We’ve gone back to this historic vehicle so that we can offer a maximum number of authors and a wide variety of writing styles and genres in a small amount of space and a short period of time. Those are all perks in today’s rushed society.”
“That is also our gimmick. It’s different, but our readers are going to enjoy the immense variety, the month-to-month suspense, and the flexibility.”
Beta pioneer subscriptions are currently available at $19.95 for the virtual magazine and $29.95 for the print magazine. To subscribe or to get more information, visit www.TheGayPublishingCompany.com or this post at www.theGayEditorsBlog.com.
